January. New beginnings – Time to Grow & Change

January, a time for new beginnings, increased wellbeing, a fresh start, shedding bad habits, the Christmas pounds, getting back to the comfort of routine so our balance of health, wellness and wellbeing increases and our mental fatigue, anxiety and depression subsides. It is a time of new hope, a life makeover.

With all good intentions we set our goals, our hopes are high and today is a good day…… until tomorrow. Little hooks of hesitancy, a lack of self confidence and fear begin to set in January 3rd.

First of all I just want to reassure you, yes you - that you are unique and you are amazing.

Life is full of ups and downs and both these are facts and are true. It is just that sometimes we unknowingly and unintentionally set ourselves up to fail or we do not understand how to negotiate this pathway alone. You are not alone. We are all companions on the journey!

Perhaps we have a dream and then we sit back expecting it to happen - and it doesn’t?

or

Perhaps we have gone into automatic and simply use ‘the Rinse and Repeat’ method of changing our habits without thinking? - and it doesn’t?

Are we not surprised and dismayed as we are gradually consumed by that creeping sense of failure which develops into a tsunami of anxiety, insecurity ….. and before we realise it self blame. The feelings of failure become all consuming. Negativity has become a squatter in your thoughts - without your permission.

Secondly, I want to reassure you are a person of value, you are unique and you are amazing.

When we feel anxious, lacking in self confidence and self worth, and feel stressed, procrastination sets in and so on. Do you start to show your public face with friends family and colleagues, not wanting to admit you have failed? (In your self criticism from that inner voice?)

A 2021 study showed that the average American only lasted ten days into dry January. One in ten gave up by January 3rd. The rest days of January, gym membership soars when perhaps the guilt trip is at its strongest. Indeed, yes this is a distraction. So you have high hopes of a new you and now we're heading towards the middle of January and the cracks and doubts are starting to manifest themselves.

The Science Behind Approach-Oriented New Year’s Resolutions is at its core: The success of approach-oriented goals is tied to how the brain responds to positive verses negative framing. Approach goals activate the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with motivation and pleasure. ( 28 Dec 2024)

You are not alone. Realisation. We have been all there, we are all companions on the same journey of life.

Do you think it might be time to reach out for help and support? - but only if you are serious that you want it? Or perhaps you might want to try one more time?
