Welcome March and Spring – and hopefully, warmer temperatures!
After the gloomiest February on record, it is a joy to witness Mother Nature awakening. Thanks to last year’s pruning, fresh new growth is now pushing through the cold soil. The uplifting yellows of daffodils, the striking ultramarine blues of hyacinths, and the vibrant reds, yellows, and blues of polyanthus bring a burst of colour and hope. One can finally start making plans for the days and months ahead. Perhaps even take a risk – venturing out without a coat! How uplifting it is to feel the sun’s warmth on your cheeks.
The Benefits of a Cold Winter
The good news is that the cold is beneficial for herbaceous plants. Frost helps keep nature in balance, triggering the conversion of starches into soluble sugars, providing vital energy for growth.
What seems like a stagnant time for us is actually an opportunity for reflection, rest, and healing. Stillness can lower anxiety, elevate mood, and help us move forward after feeling stuck in a rut. Growth is an essential part of life—without it, we can feel stagnant. Life is undeniably an uphill journey, filled with ups and downs.
Are You Ready to Take a Leap?
Dare you start planning a holiday, or do you prefer the comfort of your shell? With airport expansions making headlines, there may still be some travel bargains available.
Have you ever felt anxious about going on holiday?
I recall a story about Lizzie, a young mum of two, embarking on a family holiday to Malta. Despite her nerves, she boldly asked the air stewardess if she could take her children to visit the cockpit. To her delight, the pilot agreed. Inside, she saw an overwhelming array of instruments—knobs, throttles, pedals, and screens—much like life when we feel out of control.
The pilot pointed out the Attitude Indicator, explaining its crucial role in aligning the aircraft with the horizon, ensuring a safe takeoff and journey. This struck Lizzie—just as a pilot must have a reference point to navigate safely, so must we in life. Without a guiding perspective, life can feel like a jigsaw puzzle without the picture.
The Power of Attitude
Our attitude plays a critical role in our journey through life.
What is attitude?
- A complaint or a compliment? Something we can sense or see?
- A feeling expressed through behaviour—our body language, facial expressions, and a simple smile.
- A powerful, contagious force.
Try smiling at a stranger today—you might just brighten their day and lift your own spirits.
When surrounded by negativity, guard your thoughts. Combat negativity before it takes root in your heart and mind. A hardened attitude closes us off, while a positive one fosters growth. Our attitude, more than our words, determines how people respond to us. It draws others in or pushes them away. It is never content until it is expressed.
Taking Small Steps Forward
Do you expect life to hand you opportunities, or do you take small steps to create them?
Consider this true story: A man stood chatting with an elderly lady at a bus stop in the pouring rain. They exchanged happy stories until the bus arrived. As the woman boarded, her bus pass was declined—the driver told her she was a few minutes too early. The kind stranger behind her stepped forward, slowly shuffling forward in conversation until the driver allowed them both on the bus. As she took her seat, she turned to him with a beaming smile. He smiled knowingly and winked.
A small act of kindness can make a big difference. A genuine smile, a moment of patience, or an encouraging word can transform someone’s day.
Reflecting on February
February can be a time of procrastination, anxiety, and feeling directionless. But progress happens in small steps.
- Reflect on your journey so far.
- Acknowledge how far you’ve come.
- Celebrate the little wins along the way.
Your current mood affects how you recall your successes, so take a moment to list your progress and give yourself credit.
